1st Annual Silver Lake Kids Carp Cull Contest – Friends of Silver Lake is excited to announce the 1st Annual Silver Lake Kids Carp Cull Contest! We are paying cash rewards for carp! We’re calling all kids (16 and under) to fish for carp on Silver Lake, and bring their catch to the Township Park at Silver Lake Sand Dunes on Sundays May 26th, June 2nd and June 9th between 1:30 and 2:30PM. We’ll pay $2/carp, $50 for the most carp each Sunday, and a free t-shirt for the first 50 kid participants during this year event. We’ll dispose of the carp submitted. Removing nuisance carp from Silver Lake helps promote the efforts to improve water quality, establish native aquatic plants and improve our fishery.

2024 SLIB Water Quality Efforts – The Silver Lake Improvement Board efforts in 2023 included the BioChar Initiative which involved the distribution of 600 total individual BioChar filters that remained in the lake through the summer season. When removed at the end of the 2023 season one third were recovered for testing (to determine their effectiveness) and the filters that were taken for testing were replaced with new filters. The testing revealed that the filters were estimated to have removed 1.4 tons of phoshorus from our lake last Summer!

All the community members who participated last year are encouraged to again place the filters they have on the docks or lifts again this season (sample photos of preferred installation configuration are here – 1, 2 and 3).

2024 Fourth of July Boat Parade – will take place Thursday July 4th at dusk. We’ve had over 20 boats participate in previous years and we hope you’ll join us this year!

2024 Annual Meeting – the 2024 Friends of Silver Lake Annual Meeting will take place Saturday June 22nd at the Golden Township Park at the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. The agenda will include updates on our Silver Lake Legacy campaign, the latest on Silver Lake improvement efforts and electing new Board members. We also hope to hear from you about what issues you think should be driving our community forward.
